Grounded in the Wild
Hide Frontier started with a hide that didn't feel like the others.
Most buffalo hides sold online come out of the same handful of tanneries, chrome tanned for speed, with a coat that looks right in the photo and feels stiff in the hand. We'd seen enough of them to know the difference when we finally put our hands on one that had been done the slow way.
That's the hide we sell.
We built this for people who don't want decor that feels disposable. If you'd rather furnish a home slowly, with a few pieces that have weight and history and stay beautiful for decades, you're who we had in mind.
What we do differently
Every hide is American bison, taken in winter when the coat is at its fullest. We favor hides from mature animals, the ones that lived longer and carried the fullest coats, because that's where the size and the depth of fur come from.
Only a small share of the hides that come through are good enough to sell whole. Thin coats, sewn patches, and heavy scarring get cut for upholstery leather instead. What's left is first grade, and that's all we carry.
Each one goes to a tannery in the United States where a single artisan works it by hand for 10 to 15 hours, start to finish. Vegetable tanned, with plant-based tannins and time, not chrome. The suede side is oiled and left as it came off the table. Nothing sprayed on, nothing to wear off.
The result is a hide that's soft enough to pull over you, thick enough to anchor a room, and made to last for decades.
Two hides, on purpose
We could sell six sizes and three grades. We sell two hides.
Frontier Reserve is the bigger, plusher one, with a coat that runs up to seven inches deep. It's the hide people end up wearing around the house or pulling across the bed in winter.
Frontier Select has a thicker, firmer hide and a dense coat up to five inches. It holds its shape and tends to end up on the floor.
Both are first grade. Both are vegetable tanned in the same tannery. Both work anywhere in the home. The difference is feel, and we'd rather show you that side by side than bury it in a size chart.
Where the bison come from
These hides are a natural byproduct of ranched bison raised for meat, animals that lived on American land and would otherwise be cut for leather scraps or discarded. Nothing is raised for the hide alone.
The bison is also a symbol of the American landscape, of the West, and of a story that almost ended. There were once tens of millions on this continent. By the 1890s there were fewer than a thousand. The animal came back, one of the great conservation recoveries in American history, and today it lives on ranches and public land across the West. Buying a hide supports the ranchers who keep those herds going.
We don't take that lightly. Every hide is chosen with respect for the animal and the land it came from.
Our standards
Quality varies wildly in this category, and most sites make it hard to tell what you're actually buying. We'd rather make it obvious.
Every hide we sell is:
- First grade. Whole, intact, and consistent across the coat. The hides that don't make the cut become upholstery leather.
- Full winter coat. Taken when the fur is at its deepest and densest. You can see the difference from across the room.
- Clean, soft natural suede on the back. The underside matters. It's oiled and left as it came off the table, nothing sprayed on.
- Free of patches. We don't sell patched hides. Every piece is one hide, start to finish.
- Vegetable tanned in the United States. Plant-based tannins and time, worked by hand by one artisan.
And we select by feel, not just by how a hide photographs. Every one is handled before it's listed. We're checking for warmth, for density, for the way the coat moves under your hand. A hide should feel as good as it looks, and the only way to know is to touch it.
Each hide is one of one. Tone, markings, and shape vary from one to the next, and that's part of what makes yours yours. What never changes is the standard behind it.
Seasonal by nature
The best hides are seasonal and worth waiting for. We buy winter coats and release them as they come through the tannery, a few at a time. If a hide is sold out, it's because we'd rather wait for the next good one than send you something that doesn't meet the standard.
A tactile connection to something authentic and enduring
That's the whole idea. A hide is a piece of an animal that lived on this land, finished by hand, in your home for the rest of your life. It doesn't go out of style because it was never in style. It just gets softer, and a little care keeps it that way.
It's meant to be kept, and passed down.
